here's my two cents...
i believe that the dough is more important than the hole.
if you only have the "hole" in your hands. you cant eat anything! the hole is just air! can you eat that? no! Not like if you have the dough of the doughnut, whatever its shape may be, your tummy will be satisfied! thats the point of eating a doughnut!
p.s my favorite doughnut does not have a hole. hehe. bavarian!!!

strawberry filled munchkins.
which is also basically a "doughnut".. and, by the structure itself, u can already compare which is more important between the hole and the dough. as we all know, there is no hole in a munchkin.

Pilosopo _cal speaking, you are eating a doughnut because you want your tummy filled up, right? and you cannot eat a hole anyway.. so, dough is much more important than the hole. anyweiz, a doughnut is still a doughnut even without its hole..
just like what kuya jeff said, one of my favorite doughnut doesn't have a hole, Bavarian din!!!!hehehe
On the other hand, going back to the "doughnut's history", i'll give you a short view of it. it's up to you to decide which is more important among the two: the hole or the dough...c",)
n early colonial times, Dutch settlers arrived on U.S. soil seeking freedom from the strictly enforced Writs of Pastry. These laws were created after a freak accident in which a cow kicked over a giant fryer causing much of Strudeldorf to be drenched in hot oil and fried to a golden brown. The new arrivals, careful not to mention the Strudeldorf incident back in Holland, were allowed to resume the making of their one true passion: fried cakes.
In the days when fried cakes ruled the earth, life was harsh. The cakes were difficult to fry all the way through which often left a gooey, doughy center. The doughy unfried cake center often carried deadly diseases such as the bubonic plague and anthrax (not really true of course). Thousands of people and twelve bakers (the baker's dozen) died from eating unfried cakes. Still, people ate and ate not knowing if their next fried cake would be the last.
It was then a young lad by the name of Hanson Gregory stepped onto the scene. The year was 1847. Seventy years had passed since the United Stated fought Britain for independence. The American Civil War was still several years away. Without any local wars to fight, Americans had little to do. Hanson's mother was a dedicated cake maker living on the cutting edge of pastry technology. Day in and day out she fried cakes with relentless passion. Sometimes though, even her fried cakes were doughy in the center. To conceal this, she began placing walnuts and hazelnuts in the center of the fried cakes, but this left little Hanson feeling very sad because the only thing he hated more than a doughy center were walnuts and hazelnuts on doughy centers.
One night while Hanson was sleeping, an angel appeared to him. The angel was holding a giant plate of fried cakes still dripping with hot oil. "Hanson," said the angel, "You must end the suffering of your people. Reveal the true nature of these fried cakes. Also, try one of the glazed...they're quite tasty." The angel left, but the plate of fried cakes remained. Upon closer inspection, Hanson was shocked to discover that the fried cakes were hole-y. He ran into the streets shouting about his experience with the angel and giving these glorious pastries to the townspeople. Everyone agreed they were the best fried cakes ever. The people sang and danced for many days then had Hanson burned at the stake for being a witch.
according to the history, the middle portion of the doughnut is not cooked well..
eh bakit yung bavarian kahit walang hole masarap pa rin? tapos may palaman pa?

the hole is important for me because just like what you have said co-bloggers that munchkins are made out of d excess of d hole of a ring doughnut...so,it just mean extra income,hehe..
Well gUys, i believe that the hole in the donut is more important than the dough itself. The hole in the donut distinguishes itself from other types of pastries. Many types of food contain dough like pizza, bread, pies, etc. Without the hole, it cannot be identified as a donut. [Originally, donuts really have holes but then several types of donuts emerged.] I therefore conclude that the hole is more important than the dough. But even though our answers vary, marasa la gihap it donut! Ü I go for Choco Butternut & Choco-filled donuts.. yUmmY! Ü

The dough is the most important part of the doughnut. As the word implies, "DOUGHNUT" there is no word "Hole" in it. Good thing if it is 'DOUGHHOLE'. Tecnically speaking, you can't make a Hole without the doughnut. The hole is for aesthetic purpose only. I like the doughnut without a hole because you can add filling nin it. ummmmm,,,,,Bavarian and Pineapple...My bestest.,!
Anyhow, let's not fight for this questions guys..Keep running and wondring why is it so.

for me it is the dough which is more important because in the first place there will be no doughnut without the presence of the dough.So it is the DOUGH that count much rather than the HOLE.And also when eating it we are after the dough than the hole,for the dough satisfies our hunger and notm the hole.
there are also doughnuts but without the hole, so it doesn't matter whether it has a hole or not.

and mine is jUst the same with mOst of you guYz, the dOugh is more important because its the part which all of us crave fOr..in the first place..just like what ferny said, it is called DOUGH-nut.. actually, it was called that way because early bakers used to put nut (the walnuts, hazelnuts....peanuts??hehe!)on its center...
On the other haNd..it became known because of its being ringed-shape which gives importance to the existence of its hole..especially for those who doest like nuts..like me..and from that,,,different shapes and varities of flavored donuts arise..hehe!...biaS...
ok... lets put it this way...
a doughnut can NEVER be a doughnut without a dough. it's like a MAN can NEVER be a man without a body. so it's very important.
as for the HOLE, it made the doughnut famous, it gave the doughnut its identity, it created a worldwide doughnut phenomenon. just like our FACE, it gives us identity, it distinguishes ME from YOU and from everyone else. what would it be like if WE don't have our identity, our face? (just an analogy)
if a blind person will ask you to describe a doughnut, dba most likely the first thing that will come to our mind is the HOLE?
for me, even if bavarian is my favorite, i would NOT describe a doughnut like a bavarian, but with a HOLE.
i can't answer which is MORE important, but ill throw in another question.... maybe it can help us in answering...

for me i think that the dough is more important than the hole.you can eat the dough even without the hole,and one thing more is that how can you make a hole without the dough..right?
and maybe it's called doughnut because there's a dough and the nut came from the coconut which is the dessicated coconut..
and maybe the original doughnut are those with holes in it while the bavarian are just variants of doughnuts. hehe..
that's what came into my mind.. hehe..

for me the dough is more important than the hole. because in terms of basic needs we need the food that will satisfy our stomach. if i will choose the hole i cannot it the filled of bavarian and it will be 'bitin'. hehe. and i like the pineapple & strawberr bavarian which is also a variety of doughnut.
